Book artistry is a complicated thing. Whether they are only designing a cover or providing illustration, artists have to really understand the concept of a book before they can start working on it. For people who illustrate an entire book, they have to know the story in and out. Book artistry is the use of some kind of art – drawing, painting, or designing - to represent the story that’s going on inside a book’s cover. Here is a list of some women who do this.

  • Carol Barton: Carol Barton runs Popular Kinetic Press and she is one of the world’s most famous book artists. Her first work, Beyond the Page, was written in 1981 and since then, she has published many more works, some of which have even ended up in collections that currently reside in the Library of Congress, the Getty Museum, and even the Museum of Modern Art. She’s also contributed to The Pocket Paper Engineer and similar works. Barton is famous for designing the layouts of pop-up books.

  • Claire Bolton: Claire Bolton is a book designer who has over 30 years of experience. She’s so talented at what she does that she has conducted workshops all over the world, including places like Australia, the UK, and the US. She’s contributed to books like Isis Papyrus, The Printer’s Cat…Helps and Type Specimen Book. Most of her work includes designing letterpresses and working with patterns.

  • Marylee Bytheriver: Marylee Bytheriver studied book arts at Mills College and is now known for creating relief prints as well as limited edition’s artistic books. Most of her works include special folding techniques and her work can be seen in many museums around the world. She’s contributed to books like The Heart Sutra and Outsider Art.

  • Carolee Campbell: Carolee Campbell is an Emmy-winning actress whose interest in bookbinding and printing led her to a great career in book art. Her work has been exhibited in many places including Inky Fingers and 1992’s Sol y Los de Abajo, El. Campbell is well known for cutting paper into interesting shapes.

  • Julie Chen: Julie Chen is one of the world’s most famous book artists. She has been producing artist’s books for seventeen years and her work is included in many prestigious museums. She also teaches the book arts program at Mills College. Her most recent book, True to Life, won an award at Pyramid Atlantic Artists' Books Fair and Conference. Some of her work includes turning books into unconventional structures, sometimes even with the middles carved out.

  • Nancy Culmone: Nancy Culmone is most famous for her lettering work. She’s contributed to works like Raven. She and her husband, Paul Maurer, are known throughout the country for their art. Most of her work is hand-lettered which is what she is most famous for.

  • Laura Davidson: Laura Davidson is famous for incorporating many different materials into her works, often reflecting upon the passing of time and art history. She’s even received grants for her work and has won many awards. Davidson has contributed to works like The Book of Hours and Paris Illuminated 2006.

  • Alisa Golden: Alisa Golden is best known for making books. She designs them, writes them, sets them in type, folds them, sews them, glues them, really, she does it all. Her books can look like a conventional book or something else entirely. She’s contributed to works like Creating Handmade Books and Expressive Handmade Books.

  • Barbara Harman: Barbara Harman produces paintings as well as prints and artist books. Her work includes monotype or calligraphy. She’s contributed to many books including Unbinding the Book: The Boundless Concertina and More Concertina Madness, which are famous worldwide.

  • Claire Owen: Claire Owen has been designing limited edition books since 1981. She uses special hand-printing methods that include woodcuts, archival materials, special binding formats, and even etchings to design her images for books. Her work is included in many public exhibits and she’s contributed to books like A Cabinet For Curiosa and Asleep In The Deep.
